REVIEW: e.l.f Makeup Mist & Set!

Hello lovelies! As it gets hotter and hotter, its easy for makeup to melt, fade, (evaporate? hahah) or simply slide off the face. I know exactly how annoying that can be especially when the products that go wasted are ones you don't want to keep reapplying throughout the day. Pakistans hot and humid weather can be especially cruel and while one can opt for longer wearing face products, who wants to slap on a whole lot of stuff to the face in such boiling hot weather? Thankfully, for such tragic situations, the e.l.f Makeup Mist & Set exists. A holy grail product for me, this is my summer savior! Read on to find out why!

The mist comes in a semi-transparent black plastic spray bottle with 60ml of fluid for $3. I love the size of the bottle! It fits beautifully in the hands and isn't and overwhelmingly on the large or smaller side. It's a very practical size not to mention that it has never leaked on me. You could easily throw it in your purse as well, not that I've ever needed it on the go because once I've set my makeup with this, it really LASTS! You could, I suppose, if you have very oily skin, blot and powder midday, and set with this again but for my combination to oily t-zone skin, once in a day is good enough to make my face last 8-5 and longer. Foundation, blush/bronzer/highlight last beautifully with this on! When I first tried this with a blush I wasn't super happy with, I was STUNNED. Not only did the spray make it last longer, it intensified the color just a wee bit and made it look seamless! It leaves a slight dewy glow, nothing greasy, but a soft dewy freshness while making your makeup look natural!

The product contains Aloe, Green Tea, Cucumber and Vitamins A, C and E! I don't know if these work to make the condition of your skin better but they sound good because I haven't seen a noticeable difference with continued use but that's mainly because it's not in direct contact with my skin when I apply it, the layers of makeup possibly prevent whatever goodness this offers. It does moisturize and hydrate my face well and leaves soft, supple skin!

The best way I've found this to work for me is to spray this on, (and I need only three spritz-es, sometimes even only two if I don't miss my face, hahah, believe me it happens!) after I'm done with foundation, concealer, blush, setting powder and all. After spraying this on, I let it dry before I continue with my eyes and lips! I do not recommend this for your eye makeup. Not that it will decrease your eyeshadow/liner/mascara wear time, but I just haven't found it to really "set" eye makeup especially liquid liner and you could end up with smudges.

I have however tried this as a mixing medium for my cake eyeliners and it makes those smudge proof, vibrant and long-lasting! The trick is to use VERY little. Runny liner will not be so nice or smudge proof for that matter.

And the trick to use a little, is the only catch here. The nozzle doesn't spray a very fine or even mist. It's more like "sprinklers in the garden" time. No, I'm only joking. It's not THAT bad but I'd prefer a much finer mist coming out of the nozzle to ensure an even application. (Takes some time to get used to the nozzle but nothing too difficult). It's for this very reason, that sometimes a single or double spritz may not be sufficient because some areas may be left out and that wastes a bit of product! Even with that wastage, I've used this baby religiously since January this year (6 months and running) and you can tell from the very recent photo above, that I still have more than half a bottle left. Maybe it's the size of my face? Hahah! It ain't that tiny I assure you but it's amazing to see how much product I still have left! You just need to figure out how to get the right amount of product, at the right distance to get the perfect result without wasting the liquid.

I'd recommend this to people with dry/normal/combination to oily skin! I'm not sure how this would fare for extremely oily skin, although I don't think it should be a problem if you use a good matte foundation and powder! All in all, I love this stuff and for such a reasonable price, it's worth getting and trying! You can get yours at many Facebook stores taking orders for e.l.f for a price that ranges from PKR 650 onwards. People in the USA and UK should check out local Target stores and official e.l.f websites!

(On that note, I came across a Facebook page stating they don't take orders for e.l.f makeup because it is made in China, is cheap and people should be warned of what they put on their faces. EVERYTHING is made in China, so I don't really think it matters. Anything that comes from any part of the world could be harmful and you wouldn't know it so there's no reason to hate on China or any country at all. Imagine someone saying that about Pakistan, lots of renowned brand clothing and apparel is made here and exported, and it's all high quality but people who don't know our country could judge and not buy those products simply because of the current situation. At the end of the day, it's definitely important to know what you are consuming but unless one is completely sure of a product being harmful, one should not make assumptions! I am in no way associated with e.l.f makeup, but I have used quite a bit of their products even as a late teen and despite it being a hit and miss kind of a brand, I can't help love the brand that has given me so many lovely products! Call me cheap if you want, hahah)

LOVES:
-Makeup stays in place for a good 9-10 hours.
-Hydrates my skin.
-Evens out makeup for a seamless look.
-Travel friendly bottle.
-Affordable.
-No particular scent.
-Dewy, glowy finish.

DISLIKES:
-Nozzle releases chunky particles not a mist.
-Not super easily available in Pakistan.

My Rating:

4/5: Holy grail status!

  1. youve sold me on this!! I didnt think this would really help with longevity of makeup but this sounds wonderful.

And the Made in China comment is ridiculous! Most importantly ELF is cruelty free. I think that matters more.

I wanted to try this after Sara.H's review now my resolve has deepened after reading yours!!

p.s Everything is made in China, I think we all know that even the big brands are outsourcing from China since labor is cheap there, that's a nonsensical statement!

  9. Haha! You are right about the spraying and missing out the face. After using Karaja one, it took me time to realize 2 spritz are enough. :D And, yes spraying after liner is a bad idea, my liquid liner smudged. Nonetheless, I like it for day time. Great review x
